Very convenient
By W. Dan Rollins
Broan/Nautilus 180 CFM Direct Discharge Fan #509SI purchased this exhaust fan to replace the one in our 1950's home. The original was the same company (NuTone) and was probably about 20+ years old. I was happy to discover this was just about the same size and seemed to be the only option that had a on off switch on the fan instead of having to wire it to a light switch... I really liked that option. Installation was good, instructions were easy to follow. I knew when I bought it that it would be loud.. and MAN is that true! Luckily we don't run it for long periods of time. My only complaint is that it lacks support screws to anchor it into the wall. Since the existing hole in the wall was about .25" larger in diameter, the fan unit sits loosly in the hole. So you can wiggle it if you grab it. I would have liked to see some anchoring screws or something to keep it secure in the hole. But it doesn't cause a problem... if you are installing this from scratch, you will cut the exact hole which will solve the wiggle problem. All in all... 3 out of 5 mainly for convenience and easy of install. If you can get around the loudness.. you are fine. This fan is rated 5.0 sones, many fans are rated 3 or so, and many are 1 sone.. which is very quiet. You can go to Home Depot and actually hear what a 5.0 fan counds like compared to quieter ones. But I am happy with the purchase.. for the price, it does the job.

Perfect replacement for Levittown Jubilee
By Lawrence Pollock
We recently did some kitchen remodeling and decided to upgrade the original Kitchen exhaust fan in our Levittown, Pa Jubilee. This Broan 509S fit the hole perfectly, was depth adjustable and had a new outside black metal enameled deflector box diverting the air out and down. The original Broan supplied switch was defective but Broan rushed out a replacement. The small round single position switch (clockwise on; counter-clockwise off) is in the lower right corner of the faceplate. I wish now that I had remotely wired it to a wall switch because its a bit hard to reach in the very corner under overhead cabinets.

Through the wall exhaust fan
By V. LaSpisa
The fan works as promised, the only problem I encounter is that the knob that turns the fan on and off is a little short after installation. It is noisy, but it's not meant to be running all the time.
