Fulcrum and Gearing Bonanaza
By J. Hansen
I'd been wanting to get into Technic LEGO for a long time and finally jumped in with both feet by purchasing the excavator/bulldozer, street bike/chopper, mini tractor/side car motorbike, dune buggy/ tractor, and telehandler/front-end loader kits. I have to say that I am wholly satisfied.I've only built the excavator of this kit and it's such a beautiful piece that I want to admire it, play with it, and study it a little more. It was the second kit I built following the mini-tractor, which is a tiny intro to the Technic system. This excavator has a rather intricate gearing system combined with some ingenius use of fulcrum and pivots that is pretty damned cool. It has a large swivel plate and tracked wheels as well.I bought some Bioncle a few years ago just for kicks and since have had fun mixing the pieces with the kids in my family to make "Robots!". I wanted to get into Technic to add the mechanical aspect and the excavator is an essential bit of that system. I love to just play with it and examine how the pieces are related and I'm learning a lot about how to use Technic. It will probably be a couple months before I take it apart and build the dozer, if I can bring myself to do it at all. I hope I don't end up buying two more of the sets, one for a permanent dozer and one for pieces to free play with.If you're interested in Technic, you'll learn a lot from this. The finished model doesn't have quite the robust appearance that the street bike or telehandler have, but the gearing and fulcrum build of it more than make up for it. It's a killer set, and perhaps my favorite from the mechanical aspect.

The best Technic I've owned
By R. Woodruff
This is one of the more unique Lego products you will find. And an excellent deal for a collection of hard to find Technic parts. If you are not familiar with Lego Technic, it incorporates the use of gears, axles, shafts and many other unique pieces into your typical Lego construction. The result - you can make your lego creations come to life and function like real world inventions. What a great way to teach your kids engineering, robotics, etc. This set has detailed instructions for two creations - the excavator and a bull dozer. Both actually function by turning a few knobs here and there. It took my six year old a couple of days to build, with only a little help needed from Dad. The only drawback is that the pieces are ALL Technic, so it is difficult to interface them to standard lego sets, so other than following the two instructions, my son has not figured out what else to make with the pieces. If nothing else, you acquire a lot of rare pieces that can help expand your existing set with many new possibilities. I especially like the worm gears and turret assembly.

Not the best design
By R. Ferguson
I'm a big fan of Lego and Lego Technic. This is an otherwise interesting set that is beset by two problems: the track undercarriage is a bit flimsy and the worm-gear on the arm is too weak to drive both the middle and outer arm segments. With extended play, I expect the 8-tooth gear on the worm to fail. This set has been discontinued so prices vary wildly. You may find Lego's more recent excavator, #8294, to be a better value proposition. The new model is larger and mitigates 8419's shortcomings with new tracks and two linear actuators.
