5Great choice
By D. Ryan
This mortiser is easy to set up, very accurate and has a lot of power. Included with the mortiser is an extension if you choose to use another brand of chisel & bit. (Powermatic chisels are about 2" longer than most other brands.) I used this tool most often in making blind mortises on face fronts. When finished, the joint requires little hand work to clean out the bottom of the mortise. The only improvement that Powermatic could do is to make adjusting the angle on a bevelled mortise easier. Though the gauge is accurate, you have to hold the cast iron table in position while tightening the locking nut.

5Can I gush?
By Matthew WH Smith
First of all, I'm an old-school, professional furnituremaker. I'm pretty fast with a drill press and a couple Sorby mortising chisels. This mortiser is exquisite. For the money it's a huge leap forward in my shop, easily slated to pay for itself within a month. The table's movement, after backing off the factory squeeze on the dovetail gibs a bit, is butter. The side travel end stops could be stronger and easier to get at but they're head and shoulders ahead of the General International mortiser I looked over recently. The thing will mortise a 10" tall (wide) piece! Many details are thoughtfully and successfully worked out, and this tool has come a long way since my furnituremaking friend's Powermatic was made (maybe 10 years old). Clear and easy access to the chuck, excellent quick release part clamp, excellent adjustable pull handle, excellent moving table. Thanks for reading this. If you're on the fence and shopping for a mortiser, buy this one yesterday. You will love it and it will move your work forward.

5Unbelievable
By J. hain
I recently had the chance to use this floor standing mortiser at a trade show and could not be more impressed. I've demo'd benchtop models of the Delta 651, the General, the Powermatic, and the Steel. Though adequate, the benchtop mortisers works well. But if you really want ease of operation, great wood clamping, big lever arms (ease of work), and the capacity to roll through 3/4" mortises, then this machine is unreal. 1.1K is alot to pay for a mortiser, but if you have the cash.....and do a good deal of M&T joinery, you need to check out this machine.

5Powermatic still a quality name brand.
By J. Duncan
After using Powermatic's new drum sander for about 6 months now, I have to say this is one quality machine. I upgraded from a performax 16/32 and it was a choice between the Woodmaster, performax 22", or the powermatic. Although I was concerned about quality since the buyout by WHT ( Jet ), I went with powermatic anyway. I am happy to report that the quality is top notch. Everything is built like an industrial u.s. made machine but at an import price. It's 5 h.p. motor is plenty, and the dual drums mean a lot less paper changes and passes through the sander. If your like me and don't have $8000 plus for a decent belt sander this machine is definatly worth the price. My only peave is with the sandpaper. The drums come wrapped with a 4" wide roll of Klingspor paper but you can only buy 3" paper rolls which are more difficult to wrap. And getting the first wraps requires quite a bit of trial and error since you have no template to guide you. Notice... the premarked rolls for other sanders won't work with this machine since the paper wraps the opposite direction. That mentioned I still give powermatic 5 stars for this one.

4Rand T. Frantz
By Rand T. Frantz
I've had the Powermatic 25" drum sander for about a month now. It replaced a Grizzley 24" drum sander. It is a step up in quality and performance but also in price. I understand that Powermatic simply put their name on what was a Performax sander model. Both companies are owned by the same group along with Jet. The machine was accurate right out of the box. It performs nicely. I have to say though that the finish results using equivalent sandpaper grits is about the same as the Grizzly. The difference is the Powermatic is very heavy duty with nice fit and finish. It weighs in at about twice that of the Grizzly and doesn't complain when you inadvertantly try and sand a little too much in one pass, though that isn't recommended. I do recommend this machine highly but if you are a little more wealthy and have 3 phase electrical, go to a large belt sander. I don't have 3 phase or the other part right now so I am getting along quite well with the drum sander.

4Some questions
By Laurence Mate
Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the machine, the strength of construction, and the range of adjustments, which should allow for years of service. One reservation is the rubber sanding drums. When the sandpaper tears (which will happen, I learned, by trying to take more than 1/32 off even a small piece of wood), it can damage the drum in seconds.Another issue to be aware of is that there doesn't seem to be any "ready-to-cut" replacement sandpaper available for this machine. The manual tells you to order 3"-wide Jet ready-to-cut abrasive strips, which has markings on the back for different size drums. But if you follow the markings for a 25" drum, you will find that the resulting piece has the tapers running the wrong direction and winds up several feet too short for the Powermatic machine. No one I've spoken to at Powermatic seems aware of this problem or of where the 4"-inch wide sandpaper that comes installed on the machine (also made by Klingspor) comes from. Even Klingspor doesn't have any of this sandpaper available for sale.

5a very fine, well designed lathe
By J Tria
This lathe is a sleeper. Truly. I have researched lathes for months because i wanted exactly the right lathe. My requirements were, smooth operation, variable speed, quiet, vibration free and heavy. After much research and hands on evaluation I decided on and purchased the jet jet 1642-2EVS (708360) 2 hp lathe. It is the first machine that I have ever purchased that was not assembled and at first was somewhat annoyed that is was still in the crate but assembly was relatively simple. I removed the parts piece by piece from the truck. the legs are very heavy and luckily i had help. The bed was very heavy and somewhat of a challange to get it up on the legs, but assembly was very simple. Every hole was perfectly aligned. It was in a crate, very well protected and neatly packed. Before i go into the details of the lathe i would like to give you some information on the prodcuts that i did evaluate and consider. The first unit was the NOVA. It was ok, i thought rather light and expensive for what it really was. Everything was an add on, and it started at nearly $2,000. It didn't impress me. The DELTA was a nice lathe. Very clean design but it just didn't have the weight. It would have been my second choice. The ONEWAY. It was just too darn big. Really nice machine if you win the lottery. It just kind of screamed "look what i got" Too yuppie. It was my last choice. So, anyway, i purchased the jet. I went for the two hp model only because i wanted a 220 unit. They have lower operating costs and the dollar difference wasn't that great. I was surprised that they do not come with a plug, but that was no big deal.Tonight i cleaned it up and got it running. After all the research i did, i didn't realize it wouldn't take my Delta chuck. It has a 1-1/2 x 8 screw and my Delta accessories have a 1 x 8. No big deal, they have an adaptor. Phew!!!!!!!!!Everything was in perfect allignment. I turned it on and just stood there admiring the smooth operation. I have no vibration at any speed. The lack of noise impressed me very much. I just cut a bunch of trial pieces. Magnificant. I can't express enough how happy i am with this selection. Everything about it is quality.

5THE LAST ONE FOR ME !
By New Yankee
Owned this Jet 2 HP lathe model 1642 over two years now and haven't any regrets. Very heavy duty for the price and compared to a Oneway, what's the difference, price or the bragging rights like the review said below. This is built like a tank, but runs like a Cadillac, very smooth while passing the nickel test over and over. I had test drove the 1 1/2 HP Jet and the 2 HP Oneway before buying this and for $100.00 more then the Jet 1 1/2 HP and $1500.00 less then the 2 HP Oneway, no brainer. Even tested the two delta 2 HP lathes same price, no thanks on steel beds, I only like iron cast. The Nova was nice to, I just don't like the snap together bed for the price. Saved my money for nice wood and more turning tools, also banking the extra dough.

5BEST LATHE
By Wood Turner
Had the Jet 2hp 1642 for about a year now and have tried to write a review, maybe because I did not buy online. Well worth the money, very heavy and designed for the professional wood turner. If you like to brag, buy a Oneway, if you like to turn, buy a Jet 2Hp 1642 and save your money to buy nice wood. In my shop, I buy different makes of tools for how well they are built and to have the very best out of them, not the cost.

5A Lathe For All Seasons
By Marc Ruby™
Buying a lathe it one of the hardest decisions you will make in putting a shop together. The possibilities are endless, and, as you move up the price curve the cost of a misjudgment can get terrifying. Unless you are willing to settle for a mini-lathe (Jet makes several good lathes in that category as well) the bigger a lathe you can buy (up to a limit) the happier you will be in the long run.The 1642, right in the middle of the price range can turn up to a 16" inch diameter bowl and up to 40+ inches in length - in other words, a small log - is one possibility you should seriously consider. At 400+ pounds it is solid enough to dampen vibration without taking a crew to assemble or move it. With a 1-1/2 horsepower motor it has enough power to do just about everything you might want to do.Spindle speed is controlled by a two-position belt drive (0 - 1700 rpm or 0 - 3200 rpm) and is continuously variable over those ranges. While variable speed isn't a necessity, it's amazing how quickly you learn to depend on the ability to change speed as you turn. This is a superior piece of equipment and to get something better you would have to spend at least twice as much. There are exactly two things I don't like about this lathe. One is trivial, I would have likes an optional hand turning wheel instead of having to grab a cylindrical turning bar to turn the work about manually. This is only a problem with pieces that are too small to grab onto - like pen mandrels. The other issue is that, to turn a bowl over 16" you have to run the head to the other end of the lathe, rather than turn it in place. This means the lathe takes up a bit more space and is slightly less convenient. But if you are working in that size range you probably should be looking at a more specialized tool.I would rate this a best buy for the amateur through semi-professional woodshop. I've been using one for a while now, and I've had no reason to regret the decision. Keep in mind that, whatever lathe you buy, your next really big expense will be equipping it with all the neat gadgets that make woodturning a world of it's own.

4Jet 1642
By Steven Lewis
I have owned this lathe for over a year and have been more than pleased with it's performance. I purchased it at a woodworker's show so I eliminated shipping woes. It was easy to set up, but you will need three people. The electric variable speed control has a nice digital readout on the front of the headstock unlike the Delta 1642 which doesn't. The on/off switch is located on the headstock a feature I like. Wherever you have the headstock positioned on the lathe bed, the switch is right there with you. The switch also has an additional safety feature where if there is a power loss, the switch will have to be recycled before power is regained. Nothing worse than to have it start spinning if your not ready if power is reset. The index system is the only feature I'm not happy with. The three hole pin system is a burden to work with and they're not numbered. The Delta 1642's indexing system is numbered and easier to use. The Jet headstock is much beefier that the Delta. I mounted a large chunk of walnut and had no problems with vibrations or wobbles at low speeds under 800. Once the chunk was trued out, speeds over 800 were no problem just a slight wobble. I built a balast box and filled it with 300 lbs of sandbags and and it greatly improved the stability. The Jet legs are manufactured with brackets that will hold 2 x 4s which is the framework for my balast box. You can see the plans for it on www.woodcentral.com. I can slide the Headstock all the way to the end of the bed and turn bowls with no problem. Overall, I'm totally satisfied and I would recommend the Jet 1642 as a mid-size lathe selection over the Delta.

5Cadillac of Lathes
By J. Schofield
Jet really thought of everything on this lathe. I previously had a 1/2 HP lathe with turning headstock and one of those cheap stands they typically come with. This thing is HEAVY. The stand is basically two sets of cast iron legs that weigh quite a bit all by themselves. The features on this lathe make it a pleasure to use. The variable speed is simply a dial that works like one of those pushbutton/turning light switches so you can dial in any speed you like. The electronic readout is really neat too. It also has forward/reverse so you can reverse the direction for sanding. If you're in the market for a lathe, don't opt for the cheap solution like I originally did. If you're going to get a lathe, get a good one like this one. The features it has and its convienences allow you to get better and better at the lathe over time instead of fighting the equipment. You will end up needing a little more than 1/2 HP over time. This lathe rivals ANY of those costing much more. The only way I wouldn't seriously consider this lathe was if I were going to do many large bowls. It never has failed to do anything I asked it to do and I've had it for about 1 year now.

4Best deal for the price
By cKr
Picked up the 15" model today at Rockler for $280. Assembly was a snap, about 20 minutes, one person operation but putting the top on should use two for safety. Very little cleaning of the cast parts required. Has same h/p(3/4) as the 16 1/2" and same chuck capacity(5/8"). Great feature is the built in work light, just pop in a 40-60 watt bulb. Work light has seperate switch on left side. Power switch right up front for easy access. Chuck-key holder is on the right. Easy speed changes.Made in China unfortunately...

3Good with a few problems.
By Well
I purchased this model about 3 months ago, and have been using it since. Overall I can't complain too much. There are a few items that I do not like.1. The whole assembly for the height adjustment is cheaply made and questionable. I wonder how long this will hold up if I have to rotate it too many times.2. The chuck is junk, and the key is an absolute joke. The jaws on the chuck are very small, and will not grip a small round bit unless you rally crank down with the key. Which is a major problem considering that the key is the cheapest p.o.c. I have ever seen. It is too small for the chuck, and you absolutely cannot put sufficient clamping force into the chuck without stripping the key. I'm in the market for an aftermarket chuck, so if anyone knows of a good replacement please let me know.Other than that, it's been a big upgrade over my dad's old craftsman floor model.

5Probably the best bench top drill press
By G. Peterson
For those of you who need a quality drill press, but whose shops are a little small for a floor-standing model, this is probably your best bet. Combined with a quality drill press vise (6" or larger), you can do just about anything. I build custom furniture and use this press for numerous purposes, and can confidently drill accurate stopped holes in curved hardwood stock without problems. The press comes via freight in a single box. It is HEAVY but can be man-handled around on the ground without too much issue. You will need to assemble the press out of the box. Assembly is very easy - until you need to lift the drill head and motor housing onto the column. It is possible to do it yourself if you are tall and strong, but I recommend having a helper because it is a bit of a workout. All parts are well-machined and HEAVY. The base and column are substantial pieces of metal, and the worktable is larger than most. Fit and finish are good - the work table moves easily on the column without too much play, and the clamp handles to lock down the table require little effort to utilize and hold the table very securely. Out of the box the machined metal will be greasy and dirty - you will want to wipe it down with a good degreaser like WD40 to clean it up before use. Not necessary, but you might also want to run a metal file around the table edges and slots to make sure there aren't any sharp burrs left after machining. Once assembled, this is a HEAVY piece of equipment. I keep mentioning the weight, but my last benchtop drill press I was able to move around pretty easily and scoot it on the top of a worktable. Even sitting on an old towel, it is hard to push this drill press around even a few inches. This is good if you are looking for a solid, stable work surface. It is not so good if you like to pull it forward to work, and push it back out of the way between jobs.In use, the drill is very accurate, with minimal run-out (so-called drill bit "wobble") which is the bane of most cheap drill presses. Proper setup of the spindle and chuck during assembly is required to get perfect accuracy, but once setup properly, the machine continues to perform accurately without additional adjustment. The on/off switch in the front of the machine is large, easy to access, and feels substantial so that you aren't left wondering when the switch is going to malfunction. A very nice feature on this drill is the dedicated work light which is located inside the drill head behind the bit. The light takes standard medium base bulbs, and is controlled via a separate rocker switch on the side of the drill head, so you can turn the light on and off independent of the operation of the drill. The light provides good task lighting from BEHIND the bit - an area that is normally shadowed if you are only using ambient shop lighting - and makes it much easier to line up your drilling work.Changing drill speeds require shifting belts in the drill head (as in all non-variable speed drill presses). Fortunately, this task is made simpler by the degree to which the motor slides easily on rails to allow slack in the drive belts. To change speeds you simply loosen side-mounted motor housing clamp, slide the motor slightly towards the drill head (providing slack in the belts), adjust the belts, slide the motor back away from drill head (tightening the belts), and lock it down with the clamp. This operation can be a hassle if the motor does not slide easily, but is pretty effortless in the case of this press. The drill depth gauge is located on the side of the drill head, and has positive and negative stops. The positive stop is a locking stop, so your setting will not start to drift if you are executing repetitive drills that all have to be the same uniform depth. The depth gauge works well and accurately. The work table can be set at an angle, but I have not used this feature since I prefer to keep my table always set square and angle the work on the table (via a vise). The angle setting for the work table is located beneath the table, and there is a small angle gauge there to allow you to eyeball an angle setting. If you decide to use this feature, I would highly recommend you purchase an electronic angle gauge (one of the magnetic ones) so that you can set your table angle more accurately than what can be accomplished using the small gauge that is attached to the drill press. My last comment is to suggest that you purchase a good drill press vise for use with this press. A drill press vise will add a great degree of accuracy and control, and when setup properly will increase the speed with which you can execute repetitive drilling or angled holes. It is much better to keep your table flat and work with an angled vise, than to try to angle your work table with your work piece clamped to it. Personal opinion :)In summary, I recommend this drill press for anyone who is looking for power, accuracy and weight in the smallest possible package. A drill press is a very simple machine when it works the way it should - but will cause no end of nightmares if it doesn't. The Jet 15" bench top drill press has been for me a very dependable and reliable machine.****UPDATE May 2012****I have had this press almost two years now and it continues to perform well. I have had no need to adjust the spindle and chuck, and in all other ways the machine has been completely dependable. I am very pleased with this purchase; it is nice to have a machine that does not need to be babied to get accurate work output.

5Great Drill Press!!!!
By Amazon Fan
I decided to write this review since it didn't have a very good rating. I've had my drill press since April 2008 and I use it quite often. I haven't had any problems. It does everything I need. It drills very straight without wobble. I do woodworking and pen turning. It was easy to set up, although it was very heavy so I needed assistance placing the top portion on the lower portion. Like one reviewer wrote, it's a table top but it's not small. It's works and acts like a full size press. If you're looking for a press that is portable or that you can move around your bench, this isn't for you. I put mine on a cabinet I built that has wheels so I can move it around the garage.I would highly recommend it.***May 25, 2010 Update***Still using the drill press, a lot, and still working great and I would still recommend it.

4great drill press
By J. richardson
I was looking for a benchtop drill press, and decided to get the jet. It is called a bench top drill press but i think that it is a full size drill press on a short pole. The table top is the biggest in its class. Changing speeds and setting the depth stop are excellent. Spend the extra money for a 3/4 hp instead of a 1/2 or 1/3 hp. Just another great jet product.

5Every woodshop needs one
By Bill D. Poplaski
So glad I bought this collector. I have had it for about 6 months now and it really does the job. It got my wife off my back about dust all over the basement. Love the remote control if you are going to buy one make sure you have the remote it is so handy. Dealing with Amazon & wmh tool was a pleasure everything was done just as stated.

4Powerful dust collector, but cumbersome bag change
By William Huckaby
I originally thought the remote was a worthless frill, but now I think it is a great asset. It lets you stretch out the hose and remotely turn it on when needed at the planer or table saw. It has no problem keeping up with my 15" planer at full blast.Con: Changing the dust bag is a pain. I think that there could be an easier way to change this, which isn't a problem when its empty, but it is a pain when its full. Therefore, I recommend a cyclone type unit to catch your big chuncks and reduce bag changes. I made one out of a 50 gallon plastic garbage can, and the collector still has no problem pulling through the can and 20' of hose. I would buy this again.

5Jet Dust Collector
By Bouldermike
I bought this to replace an older dust collector. It is better in every way. Quiet, excellent suction, finer filtration, easier to empty bag. The machine itself is beautifully made and went together very easily. A terrific upgrade for my shop. I don't know how I got along without the remote control. I used to have to let the collector roar while I got things set up so it would be running when the machine started. Now I can set up in peace and quiet and just before the machine goes on, I touch the remote control and the dust collector springs into action.
