5A True Performance Coil Built To Last, And With Power That Lasts At High RPM!
By alexanderaku
41 years ago, I was building a super stock drag car I also drove on the street, and decided to go with this ACCEL Super Coil and an ACCEL Dual Point Distributor for my ignition system on a BOSS 351 Cleveland engine in a 1970 Maverick. The combination immediately proved itself with RPMs reaching 8000 where the previous ignition began breaking down at 6500. The dual point distributor played a key role in the improvement, but it was the Super Coil that kept the spark going at those higher RPMs in that engine with 12.97:1 compression - I proved that to myself by trying other coils available back in those days. None of those other coils could keep pace, and they were actually more expensive than the ACCEL Super Coil. The Super Coil maintains 50,000 volts of reliable ignition power when properly wired. Coil output drop off is minimal compared even to more modern coils. This coil was originally advertised as the ONLY 50,000 volt coil - there were no others I knew of available at the time with this output. The only other recourse then was to use a very expensive magneto ignition which had fixed timing while providing reliable high RPM voltage.Fast forward, I still have that first drag car - but it now uses an MSD CD ignition system with computer timing controls and much more radical performance items for horsepower in the +650 range, even though the Super Coil was still helping make 650 horsepower in the mid 70's for that vehicle. But, the strange thing is I still use this same ACCEL Super Coil. In the 1990's, I used it in my circle track cars until I had to quit racing due to my health. Today, I still use it for the backbone of the ignition in a 1981 GMC pickup with a 350 ci 350 hp small block Chevy engine. It works just fine with the '81 electronic distributor using a replacement coil tower that replaces the original GM "in-cap coil" for aftermarket coil use. It has performed like no other coil I've ever owned - and I've gone through plenty. How does this coil look after 41 years? The top (voltage dam and output tower) looks faded and is no longer glossy, but still doesn't leak high voltage. The primary terminals (12v) show their age, but are still electrically fit. The secondary will film inside with the internal oil unless the coil is mounted vertically with the tower up - so I keep it mounted vertically. Performance is just as great as it has always been. Other than that, I have re-painted the yellow housing black to cover the 41 years of nicks and scratches on the housing from hard racing use. ACCEL out did themselves when they built the 140001 Super Coil, and I also have no complaint with any ACCEL performance part I've ever used - and I've used PLENTY of ACCEL products.Note*41 years ago, the ACCEL Super Coils came with a sturdy resistor and instructions on when and how to use the resistor with the coil. Vehicle wiring that does not make use of an OEM resistor or resistance wire to the primary coil terminals will require the use of a resistor. After 41 years, even my original ACCEL resistor is still good.

5not just run but perform
By luie67
love this coil, have installed it on many of my old cars and trucks, does not matter how cold it is outside in the middle of winter, this coil will fire up any Engine that doesn't want to,even at a half a cold crank, you can hear it ignite gas, throw out your lame stock coil and get this one, remember that automotive companies are like many others, only put in their products enough to make them work, we don't want that, we want them (our cars and Trucks)to perform!! also recommend a fresh cap and rotor with Brass contacts, fresh spark plug wires a minimum of 8MM thick and Plugs for your set up,if you have a paper element air filter throw that straight in the garbage because its not for you, and get your self a high flow reusable cotton filter such as made by K&N,Spectre 8132's are my favorite, service your control module and all other ignition connections by removing it and cleaning the contacts and applying some fresh dielectric grease because it wears out with time and will give you problems poor gas mileage and voltage drops that are hard to diagnose later on. remember!!not just run but perform!!
