Product Description

As legacies go, a man could do worse than being survived by the famous knife he designed. Such is the case with the late Colonel Rex Applegate. He was one of this proud nation's top authorities on close-quarters combat in particular, and fighting knives in general. The Applegate-Fairbairn Covert stands with the Applegate-Fairbairn Combat as lasting symbols of the colonel's dedication, expertise, and sense of purpose. It should come as no surprise that these two knives are known internationally as best-of-class among folding tactical knives. They've rightfully earned a reputation for unmatched strength, durability and balance.More than that, tactical professionals have high regard for the high carbon stainless steel blade. As well as the glass-filled nylon handles, and the patented rotolock. The Combat has the added convenience of a hearty pocket clip. 5The Best Tactical Folder You Can Buy!!!
By William J. Bennett
The Gerber Applegate Covert Folder is one excellent knife. The 154 CM steel holds an edge and is easy to resharpen when required. Because of the hardness of the steel I have found that a ceramic stone is the best bet when sharpening 154CM blades. The blade is coated with a titanium nitride (I hope I spelled that right)finish that is extremely durable. I tried to wear mine off by rubbung the flat edge of the blade on a soda can and all that I accomplished was to get alluminum powder on the blade. When I rinsed off the blade the finish was intact.Mine has been subjected to fresh and salt water and never rusted. Just rinse it off with fresh water and lube it...no problems with corrosion.I have used this knife for everything from a steak knife (plastic fork and knife when deployed or in the field leave something to be desired) to opening boxes to cutting nylon webbing and everything else you can imagine using a knife for. It has never let me down. Some will want a knife with more "belly" in the blade, but the blade shape on this is more than adequate for most cutting tasks. The serrated portion is handy for cutting rope or other tough materials. As a Paratrooper in the U.S. Army I carried this knife daily for nearly 9 years. The blade remained tight when opened and the only "problem" I ever had was when I had to replace the pocket clip after 6 years of use. Gerber sent me a pocket clip for free.I lost my original knife last year and had to buy a replacement. You can get this knife for a lower price at Military Clothing Sales Stores, but this price seems average for other retail establishments. If you need an extremely durable tactical folder you can not go wrong by purchasing this knife.

4A great knife
By Somyunguy
I second the previous review, but with the following additions. It's an outstanding self defense weapon, obviously designed to be so, with the major flaw that it has no handstop of any sort (other than the textured depressions on either side), making the common self inflicted injury of slicing the inside of your fingers on solid point contact a real concern. It has a manual safety catch on the blade lock, which is a plus.It is not a double edged knife as is advertised here. It has a partial double edged bevel, but the false edge is blunt(?). I don't know why; perhaps to give the point ever so slightly more durability. It's grip is very durable and very lightweight, making it agile but lacking balance for grip changes.

5More on the Covert
By althair
Not a lot to add to the above two excellent reviews except that I believe the blunt side of the spear point blade was intended by the knife's designer to actually be sharpened into a second sharp edge, making it into a true double edged blade. I base this on the combat fixed blade knives designed by Fairbairn and Applegate, whose names appear on the blade of this knife as a tribute; those fixed blades are all double edged! In addition they feature a nearly identical handle design. Further evidence of the intention for both sides of the blade to be sharpened is the fact that both sides of the blade fully retract into the handle when the knife is closed, making it safe to handle even with a double edge of razor sharpness. Very conveniently, the bottom inch of the blunt side is flattened and 1/8 if an inch wide, allowing you to safely close the knife with one hand without cutting yourself; again evidence of my theory. So my guess is the folder was made a single edged blade for legal reasons. Perhaps it is not legal in some states ( or most states, or all states?) to have a double edged folding knife. So Gerber may have insisted on blunting the second edge. The problem is readily fixed with a sharpening stone, but of course, that could leave you in a legal quandary. Then again, if you were fighting for your life (isn't it Applegate who wrote a defense manual called Kill or Be Killed?) you might not worry that the knife you were carrying and which no policeman ever confiscated because why would they search a perfectly normal and respectable person like yourself, or because you are a policeman, well, would you really worry about whether the knife was a legal carry? Outstanding Knife!
